Sorting the winners from the losers is a difficult process. This is especially true with lawyers. Most people find law and lawyers a bit intimidating. This is why, in most cases, I suggest using a local Bay Area lawyer to represent you for issues local to San Francisco. Using a local lawyer for local issues it will easier to find people that know the lawyers reputation.
Here are a few rules of thumb to help you determine if the Bay Area lawyer you want to hire is a looser or a winner.
For these three reasons I always look for a local Bay Area lawyer. Why you ask? Because reputation is everything. So if I hire a Bay Area lawyer that answers their own phone and asks for money up front I will have a broader pool of information to pull from about that them by talking to people that have worked with him or her. A local Bay Area lawyer with a good reputation may have a not so great win loss ratio but knowing local people to tell you about how tough the cases were or some other aspect may help you make a more informed choice.
You hit the nail right on the head here. If you have a case in the Bay Area area use a Bay Area lawyer. And if you need a lawyer you need one that will fight for you. They all say they will but will they really fight for you.
Looking for a few key characteristics of a Bay Area lawyer that is a winner will help you find the lawyer that is best for you and your case.
Another thing is that for certain cases like, criminal cases, lawyers will always ask for money up front. It would be silly for them not to.
I think it is just as important to find a good lawyer as it is to find a local lawyer. I would rather find a good lawyer from out of town than sticks with a local lawyer that isn’t really all that good.

I was not trying to say that you should take a local lawyer over a good lawyer. You have to look at the merits. Of course you would not want to hire a lawyer just because he is from the local area.
But so few people actually think about where their lawyer is from. Some lawyers say it should not matter. it is my opinion that it does. All I am saying is keep that in mind when you are looking to hire an attorney. if you have two lawyers that are equal in every way except one is from the local area, why would you hire the one from out of town.
